The most common test for English language proficiency is the International English Language Testing System or IELTS. Those who want to study and immigrate to different countries of the world including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe, have to take this exam. Recently, British Council and IDP (International Development Program) Education have brought a big change in IELTS exam in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the IELTS exam, the use of pencil was mandatory in the listening and reading tests, the use of either pencil or pen was allowed in the writing part. But from now on, due to the new rules, the pen must be used compulsorily in the three parts of listening, reading and writing exams. Candidates cannot use pencil in any way. This rule will be effective in Bangladesh from January 25 for the candidates of both British Council and IDP institutions. This rule will be applicable in both Academic and General IELTS. Candidates cannot bring anything other than passport or national identity card to the center.
The British Council and IDP will give pens to the candidates at the centre.
Head of IDP IELTS Elora Shahab Sharmi told, "This new decision has been taken to ensure more transparency in the examination and for the benefit of the candidates. It will be good for candidates. We use pen in all aspects of our work or education life. Candidates need not use eraser or sharpener with pen.
A considerable amount of time is spent on the test for sharpening pencils or erasing writing. So using pen will save time and candidates can utilize that time in preparing answers. This is a new rule and is being offered in many countries.
British Council marketing manager Zubair Naeem told, "As a result of this new rule, candidates do not have to bring anything with them. There will be no hassle of bringing anything. Candidates will save time and can take the exam faster. We use pen for various tasks at work, filling forms or signing in our private life. Therefore, as a result of using pen in IELTS exam from now on, the candidates will get the benefit of using pen in the exam in their future life as well.
However, Bangladeshi teachers and students of IELTS think that the candidates may face some problems due to this new rule. According to them, the use of pencils in IELTS listening, reading and writing sections is convenient. Because, if you make a mistake, it can be fixed immediately by erasing it with a rubber. But if you make a mistake due to the use of a pen, you will have to cut it, and you will not find a place to write correctly.
IELTS candidate Nahid Islam told, "I registered for the IELTS exam in January." I have been practicing writing, reading and listening with a pencil for six months. But now I suddenly hear, pencil cannot be used. As a result, I am a bit worried about the exam. Because I have no idea what the pen will give and how it will be.'
IELTS teacher and director of Petronas Education Mostakim Shuvo told, overall, the use of pens is difficult for the examinees. As listening and reading tests require writing answers in a very small space, many times it is necessary to change the answers. Due to the use of pencil, the examinees could easily erase it and write the correct answer. But the candidates will not get this benefit due to the use of pen. Most of the problems will be in the writing part. If you want to delete any new vocabulary or any correction there, you will face big problem. Because writing with a pen cannot be erased, you have to make cuts, there will be no place to write new words after the cuts.
Mostakim Shubo said that the test center will provide the pen with which the candidate will write. As a result, students may not be used to that pen. This will slow down the writing and many may find it difficult to finish writing in a certain time. But to solve this problem if IDP and British Council arrange additional answer sheets in each part, then students can get rid of this problem. Because, then there is no need to erase if you make a mistake, you can cut and give the correct answer in the additional answer sheet and you will not have problems with space.
